This file contains 3 Think C 5 projects. 1 "NewCube" which puts up a data window and a drawing window, then uses point plots to draw an anitmated cube which rotates on two axis'. It's an update from an old .c file I found on the old BMUG BBS. 2 "NuCube" is a variation on the other done by Mark Hanrek, which adds a more sophisticated Mac shell and includes a GWorld. 3 "NewShuttleViewer" is a Pascal to C port I did of "Eddy's Shuttle Viewer, and improved upon it slightly. The original and .p file is included. There's also a code fragment that can be added to draw the coordinates where the points result over the window repeatedly as they are generated. The program draws a wire-frame Space Shuttle, ala point plots, then erases, then draws a slightly rotated view, repeat ad infinity. -Ken- [Archived as /info-mac/dev/src/three-point-plotters-c.hqx; 86K] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 1994 21:57:27 -0600 From: ehfm@midway.uchicago.edu (Eric Hoffmann) Subject: [*] Alice23b5.cpt Alice 2.3b5 is an offline FidoNet/.QWK/.XRS mail reader that works on your Mac. Originally Alice was designed as an .XRS reader. XRS is a format supported by many bulletin board systems that run on DOS computers, and it offers similar capabilities to a full-blown Point system. Then Michael Keller added support for the .QWK format, which is also a very popular offline option for DOS boards. In both cases, message packets were downloaded from the BBS using your regular communications software and then read offline using Alice. Replies would be uploaded during the next online session. The host BBS had to offer XRS or QWK offline options before Alice could be used. Now, with the addition of a small program called "T2," which is included in this archive, Alice can work in conjunction with the freeware Fido mailer Charon 0.985, or with the shareware mailer F1, to form a complete Macintosh FidoNet Point system. The last complete manual for Alice was contained in the 2.1.4e release. This version (2.3b5) is the current beta release and it fixes a number of bugs in earlier releases, as well as adding numerous features. Alice is System 7.1 savvy. Shareware. It is a Hypercard stack (currently in .sit format) which allows you to tract a variety of investments. I am not the author, but use the stack and highly recommend it. I downloaded it from AOL and am posting it with the author's permission. The author's ReadMe file is below. Enjoy! EMH The Financial Portfolio stack lets you keep track of your accounts & investments and allows you to calculate your net worth, capital gains, etc. This is a major revision to the last version uploaded to America OnLine (version 2.8). If you own previous versions of the stack (2.1 and above), you can import the information. New features include: - a redesigned interface with new pop-up menus for navigation - customizable categories and assignment of details to those categories - integrated Help in a windoid-no separate Help stack needed - a customizable floating palette for commonly-used functions - unlimited number of user-defined reports in addition to several built-in reports - numerous obvious and behind-the-scenes functional enhancements Please take advantage of the Help screens available in most areas of the stack. These will explain the use and features of the stack. Requirements: 1) HyperCard 2.1 (I haven't tested the stack with the HyperCard Player) - please assign at least 1600K to the application with the "Get Info" dialog (2000K or more may be even better) 2) Put the "oPortfolio resourceso" stack in the same folder as the main Financial Portfolio stack; if you don't, you will be asked with a dialog box to search for it if it is required (see below.) 3) This stack makes extensive use of WindowScript (version 1.3 used), a HyperCard add-on from Heizer Software that allows the creation of custom windows and dialog boxes. If you own WindowScript and have it installed in the hierarchy, the stack will ignore the WindowScript resources in the "oPortfolio resourceso" stack and use those in your own WindowScript stack. If you've never heard of WindowScript before, you obviously don't have it installed; in this event, the stack will automatically place the "oPortfolio resourceso" stack in the hierarchy upon opening and remove it upon closing. This program is "kidware": if you use it, please send me a dollar (or more) to the address below and I will forward it to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (the late Danny Thomas' pet project). Hello Netters, The only downer about being 'on-net' from home is that I have to keep swapping the serial leads of my modem and ancient HP DeskWriter. (I have LocalTalk in the other port.) After all, the connectors in the back of my SE/30 have a finite life in terms of mating cycles. I've been toying with the idea of getting a device I've seen advertised, known as an Axion Serial Splitter. This gives you three output sockets in a (stylish!) pod on the end of a short serial lead. I've never seen them mentioned here before, so I'd like to ask if anyone is using one, and if it has revealed any shortcomings. I'm particularly interested in using it with hardware handshaking to my Global Village Teleport Gold. I'll summarise if there's interest. Cheers, Francis K. Francis K. I also had a problem with failed shut-downs & restarts in which the finder would simply cycle without shutting down (or restarting). That was a separate post. I received _many_ replies, over three-quarters of which were people having the same problem! A few of the replies had helpful information and I did solve the problems. Therefore I am summarizing some of the helpful replies back to the net. If I have neglected to include any reply, my apologies in advance to the writer, I've just selected a couple that summarized the situation well. Also, if I failed to respond to anyone, I also apologize. It's a reflection on my disorganization Allan Bloom wrote: Jonathan, that message almost invariably means an extension problem. You have an extension that is not System-7 compatible. Or you have a conflict between otherwise compatible extensions. Not much for it except to turn off your extensions, one at a time, and see which is (are) the culprit(s). I use a binary search myself, turn off half. If the problem persists, the culprit is in the ones you left on. ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU provided this comprehensive reply: The bad F-line is due to numerous problems: On the LC and LC-II it has been caused by an overload of the the processor chip as there is a 16bit BUS on a 32bit CPU. This means a logjam of information trying to get to the CPU. This occurs during 32bit addressing, conflict of extensions, or an unclean desktop file. On 68040 macs the error is usually due to an incompatibility with the Cache system of the 68040. Once you have isolated the appliction the Bad F-line error occurs most frequently try one of the following solutions to get rid of the Bad F-line error, Extensions off, 32bit addressing off, rebuilding the desktop, or zapping the PRAM. To turn off extensions, simply hit the SHIFT key on startup until the startup screen tells you extensions are off. No ill side-effects will be seen from this cure except that any files in the Extensions Folder will be disabled. 32bit addressing and your Cache is controled by the Memory Control Panel. To clean the desktop file hit the Apple and Option key simultaneously on startup until the desktop requests if you want it rebuilt. Comments on the Get Info will be erased when you "Rebuild your desktop". In addition your PRAM may have gotten faulty settings. To "Zap your PRAM" hit Apple, Option, P, and R keys simultaneously on startup. This will reset your Control Panels to factory settings. Finally the problem may be due to a lack of a Math Coprocessor. There is Software-FPU at sumex-aim.stanford.edu through FTP or Gopher. This is a great program to help run Math Coprocessor-lacking machines. lingenjs@biola.edu agreed with the above that this problem was caused by an init conflict and added: In my case, I was having all kinds of problems. They seemed to stem from the Newer Technlogy Quadra 700 Overdrive I had. I returned the overdrive and haven't seen a bad F-line instruction since. Regarding shut-down/restart problems, holst@pegasus.ping.dk (Bo Holst- Christensen) wrote: Sounds like a disk or SCSI problem. I have seen similar symptoms in a few situations. I have a few suggestions you can try out: 2. An extension, or shutdown routine is trying to do something on the drive, after it has been unmounted. Try booting without extensions/startup applications, and leave the machine running a few hours, without starting any applications. If the problem disappears, this may be the reason. You then have to find the guilty piece of software. 3. The driver on the drive may be trying to park the drives heads too soon, resulting in the CPU waiting forever for the drive to come back on, to do the finishing touches. Start the driver installation software and check if the driver software has an option to turn this off. 4. The boot blocks, driver, system or partition map on the drive has been corrupted. Try replacing these (one at a time). 5. System 7, VM or 32bit incompatibility in the driver software. This should only be the case with old drivers, most newer (after 1991) drivers should not have any problems. If you have old driver software, try replacing the driver with a newer driver. 6. Hardware failure in the SCSI interface on the CPU or most likely the drive. Try replacing the drive :-( Finally, someone suggested that shut-down/restart problems may be caused by a battery running down (the timing is right for me, I have a IIfx). As it turned out, I had an init with a bug which was causing conflicts and corrupted my finder. Reinstalling system software eliminated the 'bad f-line' problem, but the shut-down problem persisted. I ran a useful utility 'DiskCheck' (comes with and requires AlSoft's DiskExpress II) which diagnosed 'bad boot blocks' and 'missing extent' or 'bad extent' (don't know what any of that means so maybe I copied the information incorrectly). In any case, Norton Utilities fixed it. Hope this helps someone else. Waiting for enough money to buy the excellent Apple 16" monitor, I've "hooked" a Sun GDM-1662B following the instructions provided by Denny Gentry last year (see info-mac/info/hdwr/sun-color-monitor-hookup.hqx). Now I've my 660av thinking he have an Apple 21" monitor connected. The picture tube is only 16" wide so everything looks smaller but it is very usable. Here comes the troubles: As the 660 has "only" 1Mb of VRAM, it can provide "only" 256 colors on an 21", what is acceptable for most work. But if I bought a 660av, you could imagine I want to play with her video input capabilities. I can't display any color video with the monitor application in this mode (21"- 256 colors) which seems to be explained by the fact that the VRAM is shared between the graphics and the video window. I need to reduce the depth to 16 or 4 colors for freeing some VRAM which could be use for the video window. Then I discover an interesting feature: in the monitor control panel there are 4 choices for the screen size: 21" Apple color monitor 512x384 640x480 768x576 The last three choices are to be used when you want to output the video to a TV or a VCR, but if you select one of them and restart, you got a window of that size on the 21" monitor (centered on the screen with black outside). Now in the 640x480 mode you can have a 16 bit depth (thousand colors). According to the technical information provided with my Mac, in the 512x384 mode I should be able to display millions colors, YES MILLIONS !!!! To recap the story so far - my LaCie Magneto-Optical drive went belly-up about 6 weeks out of warranty. When I called their tech support the word was that they had stopped offering out-of-warranty (for-a-fee) repair services. I wes stunned, and reported the conversation to info-mac (v11n236) along with a plea for opinions. Please note that it was *not* a call for a boycott. I simply wanted to hear from people who agreed that a company should stand behind its products. I heard directly from only a couple of people, but did see a fair amount of disucssion here during the following few days (V11n239, 242, 243). I also received a msg from Adam Engst wanting to turn my posting into an editorial in TidBits. I replied to him that I really wanted to be sure I had exhausted all possibilites of service >From LaCie before going that route. I have since talked further (twice) with people at LaCie, and their policy seems fixed in stone. The argument is that if they accurately cost the expense of stripping a unit, returning a defective drive to the manufacturer for repair, then re-installing the repaired drive in the unit and shipping it back to the customer, the final cost is slightly higher than the cost of the customer purchasing a completely new unit. What's worse, the guarantee from the drive manufacturer on the repaired drive would only be for 90 days rather than one year as on a new unit. The point I've treid to make to them is that if this is true (and I have no reason to doubt it), then what LaCie should be doing is "remanufacturing" drives. Their business is based on buying boxes, power supplies, drives and assembling them. They don't contract this assembly work out, it is done in-house. Thus they could offer for-fee repair service for the cost of dropping in a fresh-from-the-factory drive or power supply (whichever is defective). This *can't* be more expensive than the cost of a completely new unit. I have proposed this to the people I can reach by phone, and one of the higher-ups on the board of directors. None of my attempts to reach anyone in authority by FAX or E-mail have been answered. Although I was assure my FAX would be passed on to the board and my second attempt at E-mail (on Compuserve) didn't bounce. So, at the moment the bottom line is that LaCie wants us to view peripheral devices as disposable items. They (seemingly) have no plans to offer any sort of repair service for out-of-warranty units at any cost. I bought a Hammer 130, and much to my relief have found that it mounts and reads all my old LaCie MO disks. Mitchell) Subject: PC application Availability This is addressed to whoever may be able to offer assistance. I am involved in Technical Documentation and normally use a Mac computer. However, I have a client whose company uses predominantly IBM-type PCs running MS-DOS, Windows, and, some of them, OS/2. He would like some of the documents that I am preparing to be easily available on the computer, not relying solely on hard-copy. However, the documents should be "word processor" independent. I know there is a Mac-based shareware application called "DOCMaker" that does precisely what I need -- i.e. it provides for text entry, formatting and graphics importing capalities, and, when the document is completed, it saves it to a file to which specific software is attached such that the file actually becomes an application. Thus, whenever a person with the specific document wishes to open it, it is launched the same as any application -- e.g. by double clicking on it -- the same as any other application. It is not necessary to have either a specific word processor or the original application on which the file was prepared. To date I have not been able to locate, or even determine the existence of any software -- shareware, freeware or commercial -- that performs the above function on the IBM-type PC. If anyone knows of such software, or knows anyone who knows, I would greatly appreciate having any and all pertinent information sent to me by e-mail at the following address: ae091@Freenet.carleton.ca Many thanks. The solution was not very obvious, and so I thought I'd share the experience and the answer with other Mac afficiandos in hopes of preventing someone else from going through this experience. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> A wee while ago, I yelped: >I've recently purchased a used Apple 80Mb internal HD from a friend. It worked >great in his PB but it doesn't work great in my PB100. > >Yikes! > >I get a sad mac after the Hard Drive performs its self-tests. Sad Mac with >error codes of 0000000F and 000000003 (there may be too many 0's there, but >the >last letters of the line are the only ones that are non-zero). Some extra details: The HD spun up, and then accessed for a fraction of a millisecond before the Sad Mac came up. > >Put my Connor 20 back in it, and it is a happy camper. >Put this IBM 80 back in it, and it ain't happy at all. > >Someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong! I'd sure hate to be out money for >this, and I'd sure like to get this 80Mb HD working...sure would beat a 20Mb >HD! > >Please e-mail me with any suggestions or solutions ASAP! > >I'm almost desperate enough to go to my local high-priest of Appledom, those >'service' centres. > >Ack! > >Dieder Now the solution was, in hindsight, fairly straight forward. Since it wouldn't boot off either floppy or HD and came up with the Sad Mac code, we remembered the bypass command - cmd-shift-option-backspace that allows the mac to boot up without so much as scanning its internal SCSI drive/HD. This permitted a boot-up. From there, I used a driver installer to reinstall a compatible HD driver, and ever since then, the HD and I have been getting along just great! Moral of the story. Don't forget that four-fingered combo to bypass the internal HD of the Mac, and you can mount the HD. Why was it bombing/sad mac? Seems the HD had had previously installed MacSecurity, a driver-level software that prevented people from booting up the HD unless the correct password was entered. It seems that it and the PB100 didn't get along very well (HD previously was in a PB160) and crashed. Since it crashed at such an early stage in the boot-up sequence, it couldn't put up its System Bomb message, and so, it put up a Sad Mac message and almost gave me a mild heart-attack. Hope this info helps someone else... Dear Macfriends, I have this great new Q650 with a funny problem. Twice in two weeks the thing turned itself off! No shutdown, just CLICK. Both times the computer had been on for ~8 hours, and I was using it to do something really mundane, like typing text. I did not notice any dimming of the lights or other indicators of brown-out or power flicker in the room (but it is an old and lousy wiring system in my apt). I have left it on unattended for ~10 hours with no problem. Disk First Aid, Norton, MacCheck, Disinfectant all say everything is fine, except the occasional bundle-bit problem with the 040 enabler (I replaced it, and the new one generated the same message. Norton fixed it, apparently) Restarts normally afterwards. I reinstalled the system. I have a super heavy duty surge protector on the entire system, phone, modem, etc. I have a lot of extensions and control panels. Sys 7.1, cache on, 32M RAM, virtual memory off. No extra 3rd-party boards. Q1: Does anyone think this could be a software problem? Q2: Should I rush it back to the shop while it's still in warranty? Q3: Anyone else have/solve a similar problem? Unix uses and others prefer to have the Control key easily accessible, just to the left of the A, where the Caps Lock key appears on most Mac keyboards. Remapping Caps Lock to Control requires using ResEdit or the like to change the KCHR resource in the System file. On desktop keyboards, a further hardware modification must be made to disable the physical locking of the Caps Lock key itself. On PowerBooks, however, there's a further difficulty: While the Caps Lock key doesn't physically lock down, its locking nature is hard-wired into the keyboard controller, which means that even after changing the KCHR resource, you end up with a "Control Lock" key. If you were actually to use it as a Control key, you'd have to tap it again every time you lifted your finger up. (You could think of it as tapping again to turn off the Caps Lock light.) Now, I'm no Mac system hacker, but I wonder if this situation is as intractable as it appears. I'd welcome the opinions of experts, even if it's only to point out where my misconceptions are. Doesn't the system separately register key-down and key-up actions? Couldn't one, therefore, patch the system in some way so that on every key-up action on Caps Lock, another key-down/key-up pair get generated and processed? Wouldn't this solve the problem? --DGK David G. The solution was simple, but still makes no sense. You must use SUMII (NOT Norton 2.0) to fix this problem. Second, you must install the Sum Shield Init before your drive crashes. Third, create a VIF for your drive on a floppy. Finally, when your drive does crash with "SCSI Partition Map Invalid" You go to Sum, mount the drive using manual configure with the VIF you created, use quick fix, tell it that shield is installed, and it will bring your drive back to life. This process DOES NOT work with Norton 2.0. I spent a tremendous amount of time with Norton Tech Support over this, to which I was finally told "Filesaver does not keep track of the partition map information that Shield Does, but that problem never occurs anyway so itUs not important".... Right... Anyway, this use to bring my Jasmine up when Norton & Mac Tools could do nothing to help. Incidentally, the whole process takes about three minutes if you have a current backup of the shield file (I have several hard drives, so it is stored on another drive). Finally, later on I installed Silverlining on the Jasmine drive, and it hasn't crashed since. The Jasmine software was the worst, and the APS software was better but not as bulletproof as silverlining.
